CeBIT 2017: 27 Years In The Making for Trend Micro

As I entered CeBIT 2017 on Monday, a nostalgic wave hit me. I was reminded of my first trip to this conference 27 years ago, shortly after we founded Trend Micro. Walking in that day, floppy disks and computer in hand, I was eager to learn and ready to grow in this industry. My excitement since then has not faded, but has evolved along with my career and my company.

I’m privileged now to lead Trend Micro into the next era of security, as we anticipate new threats to come and mitigate risks due to the evolution of IT and the threat landscape. We recently introduced XGen security, a cross-generational approach to security that addresses known and unknown threats to provide thorough protection in today’s security environment. It is our approach to successful security.

Enterprises are faced with an increasing number of challenges and threats that present a variable in their security solution (X). To successfully secure their environments, security leaders need to anticipate shifts in infrastructure (I) and embrace changes in (riskier) user behavior (U), while adapting protection for new threats (T). Which leads to a simple but effective formula for success that we call XGen: X = I + U – T.

As last week marked the anniversary of Trend Micro’s acquisition of TippingPoint, we’ve reflected on the great strengths we’ve gained as an organization through this integration. This includes the Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) and DVLabs. Combined with the Trend Micro Smart Protection Network, this system of threat intelligence includes the best zero-day vulnerability research, early protection against zero-days for customers, and advanced information to fuel Trend Micro’s machine learning capabilities, which are part of the XGen approach.

As CEO of Trend Micro, I am proud of what this company has accomplished as a leader and visionary in cybersecurity. As a self-proclaimed geek, I am thrilled to work with this company every day to grow and evolve with the IT and threat landscapes.

Twenty-seven years ago, Cebit was for geeks or IT professionals, today, IT and IoT infrastructure had become the country’s competitive edge, country leaders like German Chancellor – Angela Merkel and Japan Prime minister Shinzo Abe would not only appear and keynote at the Cebit 2017 opening ceremony night, but also spent the second morning walking through the exhibition hall! I therefore, had the privilege of meeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and even shake hands with my idol woman leader, Ms. Merkel! What a dream come true for a nerdy girl that first came to Cebit 27 years ago!

If I could tell myself 27 years ago that this would be the reality of today, I wouldn’t have thought it possible. Neither that I shook hands with Mrs. Merkel, nor that Trend Micro is continuing to blaze new security trails and provide continuously superior protection. The excitement for security that I felt carrying in my floppy disks back then is even stronger today as I think about where Trend Micro will be in the future.
