The month of March marks the one year anniversary of Trend Micro closing our acquisition of TippingPoint from Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE). In that past year, we made a commitment to continue to innovate the TippingPoint solution while at the same time solidly executing for our customers and seamlessly continuing business operations. I’m pleased to say that we have achieved each one of these goals in the last 12 months.
Our decision to acquire TippingPoint was made with a great deal of strategic forethought. TippingPoint offered a solid position as a leading next generation intrusion prevention system (NGIPS) technology, along with the unique advanced threat intelligence of TippingPoint Zero Day Initiative (ZDI), its industry-leading bug bounty program. The combination of Trend Micro and TippingPoint offered remarkable synergies and enhanced enterprise security by blending targeted attack protection, NGIPS technology and exclusive insight into undisclosed vulnerability data and connected threat intelligence. We knew TippingPoint would strengthen our reputation inside the enterprise network security market.
When TippingPoint became available, Trend Micro provided a solid business case, a clear integration strategy, a desire to further develop TippingPoint and strong financial footing. We were able to come in as a white knight coordinating an acquisition deal with HP within a matter of a few short days.
As with any acquisition, the real work began after the deal closed. The first goal was to integrate this best-of-breed NGIPS technology, along with market-leading vulnerability research and threat expertise, into our entire security offering. Specific attention was paid to Deep Discovery’s advanced threat protection technology so we could deliver a more powerful Network Defense solution.
In one year, we also produced stellar first-to-market advances in the TippingPoint solution. In January, TippingPoint became the first standalone NGIPS solution to deliver up to 100 Gbps inspection throughput with low latency for high performance data centers and enterprise networks. Then in February, machine learning was added to TippingPoint making it the first standalone NGIPS vendor to detect and block attacks in-line in real-time using machine learning. Over the course of the past 12 months, we have filed 16 new patents related to the application of machine learning for its security intelligence.
Our integration work and product innovation was noticed by industry as well. Trend Micro TippingPoint was recently named a Leader in the 2017 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems for both “completeness of vision” and “ability to execute,” and we received a “recommended” rating based on the 2016 NSS Labs Next Generation Intrusion Protection System (NGIPS) test.
Lastly, our dedication to our TippingPoint customers was always at the forefront of all our activities over the past year. Our emphasis was on driving business continuity and providing the outstanding support and responsiveness customers have come to expect from Trend Micro.
Our work during this transition has resulted in a significant 25 percent year over year growth in TippingPoint new business. We signed on more than 300 TippingPoint employees, and the team moved into new offices, complete with a technically advanced laboratory for research and development, this month in Austin, Texas.
We will continue to improve on the design and functionality of our solutions by building upon these accomplishments. For now, we celebrate the success of a bold decision to bring TippingPoint into the Trend Micro family.
